The former National Narcotics Bureau was a state-run enterprise established in 1935 in Nan-King under the Hygiene Research Institute of the Ministry of the Interior. It was then placed under the Hygiene Administration in 1940. In 1939,the Chun-Ching branch was established. In 1946, the Shanghai, and Beijing sales branches and the Tien-jien, and Chan-shar sales representative offices were established. In 1947, the Taiwan sales representative office was established. In1948, the Beijing, Chun-ching, Shanghai and Taiwan sales branches were changed to branch offices, and the Guan-chou and Quei-chou branch offices were added. In 1949, sales offices and sales representative offices on the mainland were seized by the communists and the Bureau was moved to Taiwan. In 1950, the First Pharmaceutical Plant of the Health Administration was merged with the National Narcotics Bureau and headed by a Bureau Director. In 1971, the National Narcotics Bureau was placed under the Department of Health, the Executive Yuan. On July 1, 1999, the National Narcotics Bureau was reorganized as the National Bureau of Controlled Drugs.
